Representing Geometric Constructions As Programs: A Brief Exploration

نویسنده

چکیده

This column will publish short (ranging from just a few paragraphs to ten or so pages), lively and intriguing computer-related mathematics vignettes. These vignettes or snapshots should illustrate ways in which computer environments have transformed the practice of mathematics or mathematics pedagogy. They could also include puzzles or brain teasers involving the use of computers or computational theory. Snapshots are subject to peer review. In this issue’s snapshot, Bruce Sherin presents a series of geometric constructions made in a Boxer programming environment enriched with a modest set of primitives. In reflecting on the resultant blended turtle geometric and dynamic geometry environment, he discusses the role and potential of programmable applications and the affordances of a programming representation of geometric concepts and other sub-domains of mathematics.

An Image Analysis-Based Methodology for Chromite Exploration through Opto-Geometric Parameters; a Case Study in Faryab Area, SE of Iran

Traditional methods of chromite exploration are mostly based on geophysical techniques and drilling operations. They are expensive and time-consuming. Furthermore, they suffer from several shortcomings such as lack of sufficient geophysical density contrast. In order to overcome these drawbacks, the current research work is carried out to introduce a novel, automatic and opto-geometric image an...

Investigation of geometric parameters of seawalls on the amount of earth subsidence and its horizontal displacement by FLAC 3D software

Seawalls are built for Protecting of beaches against waves and preventing the progression of water to the beach. For a proper understanding about these constructions, a suiTable information about applied loads on these constructions should be existed. One of the important load that applied on these constructions is sea wave. Others loads are included: weight force of the walls, weight force of ...

Decision Complexity in Dynamic Geometry Extended Abstract

Geometric straight-line programs [6, 10] can be used to model geometric constructions and their implicit ambiguities. In this paper we discuss the complexity of deciding whether two instances of the same geometric straight-line program are connected by a continuous path, the Complex Reachability Problem.

An Embedded Geometrical Language in Haskell: Construction, Visualisation, Proof

Geometric constructions based on compass and straight-edge have been thoroughly studied and explored. In this paper, we present a language embedded in Haskell, to describe, manipulate and analyse such constructions. The use of embedded languages has been explored in various specialised domains, and have been shown to be an excellent frontend to describe such specialised programs, enabling, for ...
